Our Stance on Green Claims

Greenwashing is bad for Green businesses and bad for the climate.
Greenwashing is harmful to companies like PLASTIX for several reasons:

When companies engage in Greenwashing, they mislead consumers into believing that their products or practices are more environmentally friendly than they actually are. This undermines the credibility of companies that actually invest significant resources in sustainable practices and genuine environmental solutions.

Greenwashing erodes trust in the entire concept of sustainability. Consumers become skeptical of environmental claims, making it harder for genuinely Green companies to communicate the authenticity of their efforts.

Greenwashing creates an uneven playing field in the market. Companies that engage in Greenwashing may attract customers who are genuinely interested in supporting environmentally responsible businesses, diverting attention and resources away from truly sustainable companies.

When Greenwashing leads consumers to believe that all products labeled as “Green” are equally environmentally friendly, it can reduce the incentive for companies to invest in genuine innovation and sustainable practices. Truly Green companies may struggle to differentiate themselves and compete effectively in the market.

As governments and regulatory bodies become increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of businesses, they will introduce stricter regulations to combat Greenwashing. This increases compliance costs for all companies and further undermines trust in the Green marketplace.

Conclusively, Greenwashing is damaging to companies like PLASTIX, because it dilutes the meaning of sustainability, erodes consumer trust, distorts the market, reduces innovation and exposes all companies to regulatory risks.

On that background and after several years of preparation the EU Parliament on 17 January 2024 formally endorsed The Green Claims Directive and in turn the EU Council will shortly endorse the GCD, after which it will be published and should be implemented in all member states within 18 months.

The GCD represents a significant step towards ensuring that environmental claims in advertising are accurate and meaningful, benefiting both consumers and businesses. Businesses will benefit from gaining consumer trust, avoiding penalties, and improving transparency.

On this background, PLASTIX must firmly stress to its partners that Greenwashing attempts are directly unlawful and indirectly negatively affects the reputational value, brand value and consequently the company’s total market value.
